My women graduated from their course in “Healthy Homes”. After 15+ courses that I taught 24 women in two groups and from three communities how to practice healthy lifestyles and how to be health promoters in their communities. These women learned courses about sanitation, chronic illness, communicable disease, nutrition, exercise, domestic violence, and more. These women then will use this knowledge to teach 60 households about all of the topics that they learned in this course. This work will not only promote the solidification of their knowledge, but will also educate their community on how to live healthy lives within entire household and communities. These women will also give talks at the local clinic, to educate an even further population, specifically those in need of medical care about topics such as the importance of lactation, mosquito transmitted diseases, and chronic illness. Their work is all volunteer, but many of these women are motivated to promote the health within their community, to empower themselves as leaders, and to learn new skills. These women were each gifted badges, which have photo identification on them to empower them and identify them as promoter of health through Hogares Saludables. At this graduation there were guest speakers and other volunteers that attended from throughout the region. These guest speakers spoke of the difference “Health Homes” has made on their lives and how these women can change the lives of others as well. In a community where there is only one small clinic, often not stalked with much more than Advil, for over 10 communities, and 2 doctors sporadically, these women can give education to their communities that their community members may not otherwise receive.
